Considering Bathroom Ceramic Tile?
I want to to use ceramic bathroom tile, but I don’t know where to begin. What do I need to consider before buying?
Great choice. You’ll find bathroom ceramic tile to go on your floors, walls and even around the bathtub and in the shower. But there are a few things you need to consider.
Ready to tile the bathroom, but not sure what to do? A popular choice these days is ceramic tiles. They come in different designs, colors, shapes, sizes, and materials. Not only that, bathroom ceramic tile can be placed on the floor, on the surround for the bath and shower, on backsplashes, and even on walls. Ceramic bathroom tiles are also durable, damp resistant, and easy to clean. The question is: are they for you? Here’s some information to help you decide.
Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying Bathroom Ceramic Tile
Let’s start with the different choices out there. The bathroom ceramic tile is usually made from clay, porcelain, or shale. Clay will be the color of the mineral content in it. It’s also found to be very tough. Porcelain or shale will give you some of the added choices you may be looking for.
Another question.. glazed or unglazed ceramic bathroom tile? Unglazed gives the homeowner more of a non-slip surface, especially in wet areas near the shower, but the glazed tiles don’t have to be cleaned as frequently and don’t absorb stains as easily.
Bathroom Ceramic Tile Patterns and Colors
Choosing a color and pattern is very important. Dramatic or calm? You want to choose what you not only like now, but can picture staying in the bathroom throughout the years. Styles change, but you don’t want to keep changing those tiles. And you also want to make sure the bathroom ceramic tile coordinates with the other cabinetry and fixtures in you bathroom. A clash of styles wouldn’t be good either.
But you not through with the decision making yet. There’s measuring the area for the tile, decide how high and how long on that wall it needs to go. Do you want to create small designs in between the tiles? All that could help decide which shape and size. Another thing to consider is the tile’s tolerance and durability to household cleaners. If it’s a backsplash or even that sink’s countertop, it will make a difference.
Installing Your Bathroom Ceramic Tile
While weighing the pros and cons of bathroom ceramic tile, it’s good to consider the installation process. Someone can be hired to install it, but it’s not necessarily difficult, just time consuming. Not to discourage any do-it-yourself person, but if you take on the project yourself, the list of materials and instructions is a longer one. There will be leveling of the drywall, laying out exactly where to put the tiles, exact placement of the tiles, spreading the grout and caulking around the entire surface area to ensure durability.
The bottom line is bathroom ceramic tile can add a uniqueness and a splash of flair to any bathroom, but do the comparison shopping, read reviews, and even how-to’s first.
Installing ceramic tile as a DIY project? You bet. It’s not too hard, if you follow the advice in the Black & Decker “The Complete Guide to Ceramic Tile.” It’s takes some planning, the renting of a tile saw (or buying if you think you”ll be doing a lot of tiling) and then a little patience. Tiling is a lot like putting together a puzzle — a very simple puzzle. When it comes to complicated designs, like those in mosaics, most of the work is already done for you and laid out on sheets that just need cutting and installing. Listen, if I can lay bathroom ceramic tile, then it’s not that completed. But then again, if you have this book to guide you through, you don’t need my advice. The Complete Guide to Ceramic Tile
